Gay men are, proportionately, the group at highest risk of HIV infection, and their consciousness of and knowledge about the risks is generally much better than the population at large. Yet despite this, their uptake of voluntary confidential testing is still only around 64%, and of those who have not been tested around 30% have been offered a test but have declined it.1 As a result, of people with HIV attending clinics which presented an opportunity for diagnosis, nearly half left the clinic with their condition undiagnosed.1
