Whatever preventative steps we take in the UK, infection acquired in countries with a much higher prevalence remains a serious problem, especially in those who indulge in ‘sex tourism’.1 Thus, of cases diagnosed in heterosexual men and women in 2003, 21% had been acquired abroad. In addition, 13% were in commercial sex workers or clients of commercial sex workers.2
